South Dundas Soccer has been very fortunate in the last year to receive a lot of support from the community with our soccer goal replacement project. There are many worthwhile projects and organizations in the community, and we like to help out when we can. This is why South Dundas Soccer is issuing its first Score One for the Community Challenge Cup. This year, Score One for the Community will support Community Food Share.
Community Food Share is a local food bank that supports Dundas and Stormont Counties. But it is not just a food bank, there are many community support services offered to those in need.
This year’s Score One for the Community challenge will raise food and monetary donations in support of Community Food Share, and this challenge is to ALL 38 teams across all six Tim Hortons TimBits and BMO soccer leagues.
July 15 Update:
What an incredible success! Thanks to the generosity and competitive spirit of our 38 teams, 870 pounds of food donations, and $554 in monetary donations were raised. Using Community Food Share’s guide of one pound of food equalling $3.21 in value, $2,792.70 in food donations, combined with the monetary donations means South Dundas United’s teams raised $3,346.70 total! Amazing.
Congratulations to U5 Team Canada, who scored the highest number of goals in our competition (518). Second place overall was U18 Team Uruguay (327) and U5 Team Argentina was third with 180 goals. In all, SDU teams scored 3,131 goals! Team Canada will receive a pizza party on July 29 during the tournament for their efforts. Each league winning team will also receive a prize pack next week for being the top scoring team in the competition for their league. Those winners are: U7 Czechia (169 goals); U9 United States (127 goals); U11 Scotland (177 goals); U14 Germany (119 goals); and U18 Uruguay (327 goals).
While this competition has winners and prizes, the real winner for this competition is the community, and our local food bank Community Food Share.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this challenge. Now on to the remaining part of our soccer season!
How it worked:
From now until July 15, teams can raise donations of food or money. How those teams raise the money is up to the coaches and parents. In some other sports where they have completed similar challenges, teams have sought donations in the community, run a car wash, or done odd jobs for people.
On July 15, it’s goal time! Every $1 raised in monetary donation is awarded one goal for the team. Each pound of food is awarded three goals. Community Food Share calculates that one pound of food has a monetary value of just over $3. After each team’s regular season soccer matches on July 15, teams or team representatives should go to the soccer building for weighing in.
Once all the teams’ donations are weighed and calculated, and all the goals scored, the team which scored the highest number of goals will win a Pizza Party during our World Cup Playoff Tournament. Prizes will also be awarded for the highest goals scored within each of our six soccer leagues.
Food donations most needed by Community Food Share include: canned pasta, canned tomatoes, canned meat/stews/chilli, canned fruit (398ml and 796ml), canned vegetables (398ml and 540ml), cereal (no sugared or nuts), pasta sauce, peanut butter, crackers, canned meat, and children’s snacks.
This is a really important initiative for giving back that I hope all 38 teams will take part in. The community so far has helped our soccer club raise an incredible amount of money to replace the soccer goals on Fields C, D, and E and we are a year ahead of our planned schedule. Thank you all for your support in this initiative.
